Tour Overview | Highlights | Itinerary | Pricing | Details Western Ireland including County Mayo and the Donegal Peninsula
Your itinerary is set in the unspoiled villages, rugged ancient abbeys, broad peat lowlands, and the dramatic coastline of Western Ireland. Including three evenings on the Donegal Peninsula, as well as locations in Counties Mayo and Galway. Donegal forms the northwestern corner of Ireland, and is probably the least explored part of Ireland. We’ll visit the fishing port of Killybegs, Slieve League and Glencolumbkille, an exceptionally peaceful and haunting place. The peninsula provides ample opportunity for exploring the charming villages. Olcan Masterson, a walking authority on the history of western Ireland, has spent many years exploring the hills and back roads of the area. An accomplished musician as well, he has spread traditional Irish music all over Europe and the U.S. with his flute and tin whistle. Mostly though, he is a living embodiment of Irish charm and hospitality. He will show you the spirit and soul of Ireland, as few visitors will ever experience it. You will get a view of the land and the culture that comes with living it, not merely visiting it. Highlights
Itinerary
Day 1: U.S. Your journey to Ireland begins with an overnight flight from the U.S. Day 2: Shannon – Hillcrest House, Westport Flights from the U.S. arrive early in the morning at Shannon International Airport, where you will be met and driven north to Westport, on the shores of Clew Bay. (D) Days 3 - 9: County Mayo and Donegal Peninsula Each day you will visit some of these typical areas from your home base at Hillcrest House. It is not possible to see everything during each tour, as you will also take time for unscheduled stops. Your guide will plan each day considering the interests of the group, and special events taking place during your time in Ireland. Groups have frequented such events as horse races at Ballinrobe, a cattle auction, open-air festivals, and last year’s highlight was the ‘Tour de Ireland’ bicycle race. Hillcrest House lays half way between the City of Westport and the Village of Newport. Both capture the flavor of true Irish towns with their tree-lined canals and colorful shops. After a stop in Westport we drive along the shores of Clew Bay, stopping at Murrisk Abbey, at the foot of Croagh Patrick. Ireland’s Holy Mountain, named after the national saint, is one of Mayo’s best-known landmarks. Later in the day we will be at the ocean on the west coast of Mayo at a remote rocky shore called Barnabawn Point. Ballintubber Abbey, or Baile Tobair Padraig, in Irish, is one of the oldest Abbeys in Ireland dating back to the twelfth century, named for the natural spring nearby, where St. Patrick baptized his first Irish converts. Another day you could spend in Cong, with the abbey, the forest and river as well as the town itself. The picturesque village of Cong was the setting for John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara’s film The Quiet Man. The King of Connacht founded the abbey ruins in the 12th century. In 1198 the last High King of Ireland died in the abbey. After lunch, perhaps a stop on a hillside flowing down to Lough Corrib, an area of rolling hill, sheep and a myriad of stonewall. Driving north today, your first stop will be along the ocean on the Atlantic drive in Mulranny. After lunch on Achill Island continue along the ocean and wind up at the deserted famine village at Keel. Achill Island is the largest island off the Irish coast. To get there, drive over the bridge at Achill Sound, wrought by wind and water, the island is an arrangement of rock, cloud, and cliffs falling off to the sea. Three evenings you will be spend at a quaint hotel in Donegal. This journey will present huge panoramas that will look different from every segment of the road we travel. Bright azure skies appear next to blue gray, shafts of rain, which bolt sea and sky together. Still further across this ever-changing canvas, beams of light, diffused by wisps of thin cloud, will gild the sea, warming the cool gray water into pools of liquid gold. Donegal Bay majestically swoops towards you, with its quaint fishing villages and harbors. The distinctive Sligo Mountains stretch across the horizon as far south as Bricklieve with its ancient megalithic cemetery. After our exploration of the Donegal Peninsula we will return to our home away from home, Hillcrest House, for the next two evenings. (B every day, Dinners while at Hillcrest House) ![]() Day 10: Westport – Burren - Ennis Leaving Hillcrest House early this morning, you will drive to the Burren, a remote region near the town of Ennis. This beautiful area is known for the wild landscapes, culminating in the mighty cliffs along the East Coast. Tonight stay at a hotel in Ennis and enjoy dinner on your own. (B) Day 11: Ennis – Shannon – U.S. You will be transported back to Shannon Airport for early afternoon flights back to the U.S. (B) AccommodationsWhile in Ireland you will be treated to true Irish flavors at Hillcrest House, which was renovated for the sole purpose of accommodating small groups.
